Introduction
The old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” certainly applies to weeds. However, we often direct limited resources to fighting firmly established infestations instead of preventing the infestation. Fighting and managing an infestation is expensive, and eradication is probably impossible. A proactive approach includes keeping existing infestations from spreading and focusing on prevention and early detection. Students will learn about weed situations they and their families are likely to encounter. Students will discuss potential methods of weed control and prevention and the consequences of each method for a particular situation. Students will acquire practical information to help them determine how to take responsible action. This information will directly impact the continued spread of invasive plants. Once students become aware of the myriad problems associated with invasive plants that have become established, students are eager to minimize the negative impact their actions might have. This lesson provides clear, practical solutions to a problem that is often perceived as overwhelming and complex. Before teaching this lesson, read the entire lesson and make sure all materials are available.
